aquaHALT Flip – Toilet

Shuts off an overflowing toilet’s water, with the unit on the fill valve, not the wall: The aquaHALT Flip is a toilet leak detector with an automatic shut-off, and it gives the same protection as the aquaHALT 2X. It attaches directly to the bottom of your toilet’s fill valve, so it’s easy to tuck out of sight. When water reaches its floor sensor, it shuts off the water to the tank and beeps. It uses one 3/8″ water hose. To remove it, you close the wall valve, flush and take the hose off. Want it on the wall beside the toilet instead? The aquaHALT 2X mounts with an adhesive pad and uses two hoses.

In the box: the aquaHALT unit, a leak detection sensor, a new 3/8″ x 3/8″ water supply hose and two AA batteries. You’ll also need a small adjustable wrench and a small level. If your toilet has a 1/2″ hose connector, use an adapter. The sensor connects to the unit by a wire, and there’s no Wi-Fi, no app and no subscription. Installing it, in short: close the valve on the wall next to the toilet and flush to empty the tank. If water still gets through that valve when it’s closed, have a plumber replace it first. Take the old supply hose off completely. Connect the new hose from the unit to the wall valve, snug but not overtightened, then fit the unit to the bottom of the fill valve, leaving the hose enough slack not to kink. Set the sensor so it touches the floor, behind the toilet or at its base, where a level shows leaking water would run. Plug in the sensor, add the batteries and turn the water back on.

To test it, hold the power button for 3 seconds, press “open” to fill the tank, then put a little water under the sensor. It beeps and stops the water. Dry the sensor and press “open” again. What it catches: water on the floor where the sensor sits, behind the toilet or at its base. That’s where water ends up when a toilet overflows. A slow leak inside the tank, past a worn flapper, drains into the bowl and never reaches the floor, so it won’t set the sensor off. A food coloring test finds that kind of leak.

One Flip protects one toilet, so a second toilet needs a second unit.
